Maria von Trapp Thanks to the movie, "The Sound of Music", the story of the origins of the Trapp Family Singers is well known to the post World War II and succeeding generations. The music, movie and, to a lesser extent, the Trapp Family Ski Lodge in Vermont have kept their name in front of us for the past few decades.

Per Maria's autobiographical book, "Maria" (published 1972), she includes talking about the Von Trapp estate all through the first part of the book up to their sudden decision to leave, but after that, she makes no more mention of their former home as she tells of their fleeing from Hitler's presence in Austria, or even once they established their new home in Vermont.

I heard the family sing in the '50's at a small college here in my neighborhood and remember their quaint costumes and unusual songs. Wanting to read more of Maria's story I searced on Amazzon. What a joy to read the book. MARIA, the autobiography of Maria Von Trapp of "The Sound of Music" fame, is a quite readable book and goes quickly. The thing I most enjoyed was getting the story of Maria's childhood, her education, and what led her to the convent at the Benedictine Abbey at Nonnberg, Austria.

Her mother died when she was about two years old and Maria grew up with a foster mother (an elderly cousin of her father) in a little house on the outskirts of Vienna.
